The United States classifies the Muslim Brotherhood in Sudan as a "terrorist organization"

Published: March 9, 2026

United States Department of State announced that the United States has classified the Muslim Brotherhood group in Sudan as a specially designated global terrorist organization, confirming its intention to officially list it among foreign terrorist organizations starting from March 16.
The department said in a statement that the organization is accused of using violence against civilians with the aim of undermining international efforts to end the ongoing war in Sudan and promoting what it described as its extremist ideology.

Accusations of widespread violations

According to the statement, fighters affiliated with the organization carried out mass executions of civilians during the ongoing conflict in Sudan, noting that a number of its members received training and support from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
The US State Department also clarified that the Bara Bin Malik Brigade linked to the organization had already been listed on sanctions lists in September 2025 under a US executive order, due to its role in the fighting inside Sudan.

Accusations against Iran for supporting the organization

The statement pointed out that Washington accuses Iran of using various networks in the region to carry out activities that the United States considers "malicious," adding that the Iranian regime is considered one of the largest global supporters of terrorism according to the US assessment.
The State Department confirmed that the United States will use all available legal and economic tools to prevent Iran and organizations affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood from obtaining resources that could be used to support or finance terrorism.

Implications of the decision

This classification is expected to lead to the freezing of assets linked to the organization within the United States and impose strict restrictions on any financial dealings or potential support for it, in addition to the possibility of imposing sanctions on individuals or entities that provide it with material or logistical support.
