Trump exploits the tech recession in Canada to renew his talk about the "51st state"
The US president comments on the slowdown of the Canadian economy with a sarcastic political message that increases tension with Ottawa

Ottawa —
The announcement of Canada entering a technical recession has become new material in the political discourse of US President Donald Trump, who quickly commented on the news through his social platform with the phrase “the 51st state.”
Trump’s comment came after the release of an economic report on the contraction of the Canadian GDP for two consecutive quarters, which is technically known as a technical recession.
The comment reflects a new attempt by Trump to politically pressure Canada, implying that the country would be in a better economic position if it were under American leadership or part of the United States.
These statements come as part of a series of positions that sparked widespread anger in Canada, after Trump repeatedly spoke on several occasions about making Canada the fifty-first American state.
Domestically in Canada, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre exploited the growth figures to attack Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government, considering that the economic performance reflects a failure in economic management.
However, economists warn against reducing the scene to a single indicator, confirming that a technical recession does not necessarily mean the country is entering a full recession, unless accompanied by a broader deterioration in jobs, production, and spending.
Despite that, the coincidence of economic weakness with Trump’s trade and political pressures places Carney’s government before a dual test: defending Canadian sovereignty in the face of provocative American rhetoric, and addressing an economic slowdown that gives the opposition and Washington new material for attack.
