The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) announced that the convicted murderer and fugitive Rabie Al-Khalil is still at large, following unconfirmed reports of his arrest in the State of Qatar. Security authorities confirmed that they cannot verify these claims at this time, noting that Al-Khalil remains on the international wanted list.
This comes at a time when the police announced the arrest of several individuals involved in assisting him to escape from a maximum-security prison in the province of British Columbia during the summer of 2022. The investigations were described as "complex and multinational," indicating security cooperation with international partners to pursue Al-Khalil, who is considered one of the most dangerous wanted persons in Canada.
Al-Khalil, a member of the organized crime network Wolfpack Alliance, escaped from North Fraser Pretrial Centre in July 2022, after sneaking out of the facility with the help of individuals believed to have disguised themselves as maintenance workers, managing to smuggle him out in broad daylight.
Case Background:
Al-Khalil was convicted of a murder dating back to 2012, after planning and participating in a premeditated assassination of a member of a rival gang at a hotel in Vancouver. He was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for 25 years. His escape caused a major security scandal, prompting the provincial government to launch extensive investigations into federal prison security procedures.
Despite more than two years having passed since the escape, Al-Khalil’s exact location remains unknown. Intelligence sources previously suggested that he left the country through an international smuggling network.
Police Statement
:
In its latest statement, the RCMP confirmed that it will continue to work with Interpol and relevant foreign authorities to locate Al-Khalil and bring him to justice. The public was also urged to provide any information that could help in his capture, with an emphasis that those cooperating with him will face full legal accountability.
