YouTube launches a smart tool to generate playlists for «Premium» subscribers
The feature relies on artificial intelligence and is available experimentally in the United States and Australia
Published: February 12, 2026
YouTube, a platform owned by Google, has launched a new AI-powered tool that allows «YouTube Premium» subscribers to automatically create customized playlists through text commands, in a step aimed at enhancing the benefits of paid subscriptions and keeping up with competition in the music streaming market.
The tool is called «AI Playlist Generator», and it allows users to write a simple description or a specific mood such as: “Calm music for a rainy atmosphere” or “Songs for breakfast on the weekend”, and the system automatically creates a complete playlist that matches the request.
Limited Beta Launch
YouTube began rolling out the feature in late January 2024 on a trial basis, and it is currently available to a limited group of «Premium» subscribers in the United States and Australia, and only through the Android app. The company has not specified a date for global expansion, confirming that the expansion will depend on the results of the trial and user feedback.
The tool relies on natural language processing technologies to understand text commands, then uses deep learning algorithms to analyze musical patterns and link them to billions of clips available on the platform, allowing the creation of instant playlists that match the desired context.
Direct Competition with Music Platforms
This step comes as part of YouTube’s efforts to enhance the value of the «Premium» subscription through exclusive AI-based features, amid increasing competition with platforms like Spotify and Apple Music, which are also working on developing similar tools to generate smart playlists.
YouTube bets that this technology will contribute to improving the music discovery experience, as market data indicates that users, especially younger groups, tend to prefer interactive and algorithmic recommendations instead of manually curated lists.
Expected Impact on the Subscription Market
YouTube explained that playlists created through the tool are automatically saved in the user’s library and can be easily edited or shared. It also pointed to future plans to add other AI-powered features, such as more accurate recommendations and integration with digital assistants.
The number of «YouTube Premium» subscribers worldwide exceeded 90 million by the end of 2023, according to company data, and the platform seeks to increase this number by offering interactive tools that enhance the daily user experience.
Analysts believe that integrating AI into music content creation could reshape ways of interacting with streaming platforms, especially in a global market estimated to generate tens of billions of dollars annually, amid a fast-paced technological race among major tech companies.
