Digital security experts offer tips to protect devices while traveling abroad

Published: June 21, 2026

With the start of the summer travel season and the increase in the number of Canadians heading abroad, cybersecurity experts warned of the growing risks that smartphones and electronic devices may face while moving between airports, hotels, and public internet networks.

Specialists confirmed that travelers now carry large amounts of personal, financial, and professional data on their devices, making them an attractive target for hackers and digital fraudsters.

Experts advise updating operating systems and applications before traveling, and ensuring that the latest security updates are installed to close potential vulnerabilities and provide greater data protection.

They also emphasized the importance of avoiding connection to untrusted public "Wi-Fi" networks in airports, cafes, and hotels, due to the possibility of exploiting them to intercept data or carry out cyberattacks targeting users.

Among the basic recommendations is also enabling two-factor authentication on important accounts, using strong and unique passwords, in addition to keeping backup copies of important files and data before leaving the country.

Experts pointed out that charging devices via public USB ports may carry security risks in some cases, so it is preferable to use a personal charger or approved portable power banks.

Travelers are also advised to reduce the amount of sensitive data stored on mobile devices, and enable location tracking and remote wipe features, allowing data deletion in case the device is lost or stolen.

Specialists warned of the increase in fraud targeting travelers through fake text messages or emails claiming to be from airlines, hotels, or government agencies, aiming to steal personal or financial information.

Digital security experts believe that taking simple preventive measures before traveling can significantly reduce the risks of hacking or data loss, and ensure travelers enjoy their trips without unexpected technical or security problems.
