Zuckerberg announces a change in WhatsApp leadership after 7 years of Cathcart's management

Published: June 23, 2026

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced Will Cathcart's resignation as head of WhatsApp, after seven years leading the world's largest messaging app.

Zuckerberg said Cathcart was one of the most prominent leaders within Meta, highlighting his role in expanding WhatsApp's user base to more than 3 billion users worldwide, and enhancing privacy features within the platform.

He explained that Cathcart will not leave the company but will move to a new position within Meta focusing on developing new products from scratch.

Meanwhile, Zuckerberg announced the appointment of Kunal Shah, founder of the Indian company CRED, as the new head of WhatsApp, praising his experience in building widely used digital products within one of the largest technology markets in the world.

Shah's appointment represents an indicator of a new strategic direction within Meta, as the company seeks to expand WhatsApp's role from just a messaging app to a more integrated platform including business services, digital commerce, payments, and in-app purchases.

This step holds special importance in the Indian market, the largest WhatsApp market globally in terms of user numbers, where Meta previously launched the WhatsApp Pay service as part of its efforts to expand the app's use in daily financial transactions.

Observers believe Shah's experience in financial technology could give WhatsApp a strong boost in developing payment, transfer, and digital purchase services, especially in emerging markets where users rely heavily on the app for communication and business.

This change comes at a time when Meta is looking for new growth sources within its major platforms, while maintaining WhatsApp's position as one of the most used apps in the world.
