Parliamentary resignations open the door for new by-elections in Canada

The countdown has begun for a series of by-elections in Canada, after several MPs announced they will not return to the House of Commons in the fall, which will lead to several vacant seats and a limited reshuffle in the parliamentary balance of power.

Two MPs officially resigned on Friday, one day after the start of the House of Commons summer recess. They are Liberal Jonathan Wilkinson, who will head to Brussels to take up the position of Canada’s ambassador to the European Union, and Simon-Pierre Savard-Tremblay, the former MP for the Bloc Québécois, who is preparing to run in the provincial elections with the Parti Québécois.

According to parliamentary procedures, the Speaker of the House of Commons must officially notify the Chief Electoral Officer of any vacant seat. After that, Prime Minister Mark Carney has between 11 and 180 days to call a by-election in the relevant riding.

These resignations are expected to be followed by others during the summer, as six MPs have indicated their intention to leave their seats, making the upcoming fall dominated by a series of local electoral contests.

Although these by-elections will not necessarily change the national political landscape immediately, their results may carry significant importance in the calculations of the majority within the House of Commons, especially if the main parties compete for politically close seats.

These developments come at a time when the Liberals are seeking to consolidate their parliamentary position, while opposition parties see the by-elections as an opportunity to test public mood after months of debate over the economy, cost of living, and housing.
