Wide recall of iron supplements in the United States due to risk of poisoning in children

More than 350,000 unsafe packages raise health warnings despite no recorded infections so far

Wide recall of iron supplements in the United States due to risk of poisoning in children

Published: April 14, 2026

The American authorities announced the withdrawal of more than 350,000 packages of iron-containing dietary supplements from the markets, after discovering a serious safety standard defect related to the lack of child-resistant packaging, which increases the risk of poisoning, especially among young groups.

Packing defect raises the level of risk

The reasons for the withdrawal are that the packages do not meet the safety requirements for child protection, making it easy to open them and access their contents. This is considered a violation of safety standards that require the use of secure caps to prevent accidental incidents.
The withdrawn products include a wide range of brands that were sold during the period between April 2023 and February 2026, through major stores and electronic platforms, meaning their widespread distribution among consumers.

Special risk to children

Experts warn that iron, despite being an essential element for body health, can be highly toxic when taken in excessive doses, especially among children who may confuse supplements with candy due to their shape or color.
Early symptoms of poisoning include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, and severe cases may develop into internal bleeding and acute disorders in the body that can lead to death if rapid medical intervention is not provided.

No injuries so far… but caution is necessary

Although no poisoning cases related to these products have been recorded so far, health authorities confirm that the potential risk is significant enough to justify the withdrawal process, urging consumers to take immediate measures.

Recommendations for consumers

The authorities called on users to:
Keep supplements out of reach of children
Contact the company to obtain safe caps or alternatives
Return the products or dispose of them safely
A detailed list of affected batch numbers was also published to facilitate the verification process.

Common uses… and risks with misuse

Iron supplements are widely used to compensate for deficiency, especially among pregnant women, blood donors, vegetarians, and some patients suffering from malabsorption.
However, doctors emphasize the necessity of adhering to the recommended doses, as daily needs vary according to age and gender, while sufficient amounts of iron can be obtained through diet in many cases.

A recurring safety issue

This incident highlights the importance of packaging standards in health products, especially those that may pose a risk when used unintentionally, and confirms that safety is not only related to the product content but also to the way it is presented and stored.
