Urgent Security Alert for WhatsApp Users
Critical vulnerability allows device hacking through fake media files and warnings to disable automatic downloads immediately
Published: February 10, 2026
The cybersecurity platforms and experts have sounded the alarm after the discovery of a serious security vulnerability in the WhatsApp application, which could enable hackers to infiltrate users' devices and steal their personal data without their knowledge.
According to the warnings, attackers exploit the "spoofing" technique, where malware is passed off as ordinary media files, such as images or videos, making them appear safe upon receipt. Once the file is opened, malware of the "arbitrary code execution" type is activated, granting hackers almost full control over the infected device.
This control allows the opening of what is known as a "backdoor" within the system, enabling the theft of passwords and sensitive data, disabling protection systems, and even remotely controlling the device without the user's notice.
In this context, Malwarebytes cybersecurity company issued urgent recommendations, urging WhatsApp users to immediately disable the "auto-download media" feature, confirming that this precautionary measure is currently the most effective way to reduce the risks of exploiting this vulnerability until a comprehensive security update is released.
Security experts also urge users to continuously update the application and exercise caution when opening any unexpected media files, even if they come from known contacts.
