Egypt's national team bid farewell to the 2026 World Cup competitions in the round of 16, after a dramatic loss to Argentina with a score of 3-2, in an exciting match held on Tuesday evening at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, USA.

The Egyptian team delivered a heroic performance against one of the strongest teams in the world, succeeding in taking the lead with two goals, before the Argentine team made a strong comeback in the final minutes and secured the qualification ticket to the quarter-finals.

Egypt opened the scoring in the 18th minute, after a precise cross from Marwan Attia reached Yasser Ibrahim, who rose and struck a wonderful header into the net, giving the Pharaohs a perfect start in the match.

Just two minutes later, the Argentine team was awarded a penalty, but goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir shone and saved Lionel Messi’s shot, maintaining Egypt’s lead and giving the players a great morale boost.

In the second half, Egypt extended their lead in the 67th minute through a quick counterattack led by Mohamed Salah, who passed the ball to Haitham Hassan, who sent a cross from the right side that reached Zico, who shot it into the net announcing the second goal.

But Argentina began their comeback in the 80th minute, after Messi sent a cross into the penalty area which Romero met with a powerful header that found the back of Mostafa Shobeir’s net.

Just four minutes later, Messi equalized with a powerful shot that hit the underside of the crossbar and went into the goal, igniting the match in its final minutes.

In the third minute of added time, Enzo Fernandez snatched the winning goal for Argentina, after meeting a cross with a powerful shot to the left of the goalkeeper, deciding the match 3-2.

Despite the loss, Egypt’s national team left their heads held high after a strong performance and high fighting spirit, having come close to achieving one of the biggest surprises of the tournament against the world champion.

Egypt had reached the round of 16 after winning against Australia on penalties, while Argentina qualified for the same round after overcoming Cape Verde with a score of 3-2.
