New York City witnessed a state of alert after the discovery of a structural defect in a skyscraper under construction in Manhattan, prompting authorities to evacuate the site and several nearby buildings, and impose a security cordon around the area to protect workers, residents, and passersby.

The incident began after reports of falling materials from the building, before emergency teams and engineers revealed the presence of buckled columns within the structure, in addition to indicators that raised concerns about the safety of several upper floors.

As a result, workers were immediately evacuated from the construction site, and precautionary measures extended to the building's surroundings, where nearby streets were closed and pedestrian and vehicle movement was restricted at certain points until engineering inspections were completed.

Authorities confirmed that the purpose of the evacuation is not to announce an imminent collapse, but to deal with the potential danger with the highest degree of caution, especially since the defect affected essential structural elements in a tall building still under construction.

No injuries were reported in the incident, while specialized teams continue to assess the condition of the damaged columns and the extent of the impact on the associated floors, before making a decision regarding the next steps, whether to reinforce the structure, remove hazardous parts, or suspend work on the project for a longer period.

The technical investigations focus on identifying the causes of the column buckling, and whether it is related to ongoing construction work, unexpected structural pressure, or a defect in execution or materials used.

The incident occurred in a vital area of Manhattan, which increased the sensitivity of the security and engineering response, as authorities treated the site as a potential public safety hazard until the building's stability is confirmed.

The project’s surroundings are expected to remain under surveillance until a final engineering assessment is issued determining the structure’s safety and the required measures before allowing work to resume or reopening the roads and buildings affected by the evacuations.
