The Norwegian national team succeeded in achieving one of the biggest surprises of the 2026 World Cup, after eliminating the Brazilian team from the round of 16 following a 2-1 victory in the match that brought them together on Sunday evening at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, USA, securing a spot in the quarter-finals for the first time in its history.
The match witnessed a strong start from the Norwegian team, which managed to score early in the 4th minute, but the referee canceled the goal after referring to the offside technology, keeping the score tied.
The Brazilian team responded with continuous offensive attempts and got a golden opportunity to open the scoring in the 14th minute after the referee awarded a penalty kick, but the Seleção failed to capitalize on it, and the match continued goalless amid defensive brilliance from the Norwegian team.
The encounter remained balanced until the final minutes, before star Erling Haaland succeeded in breaking the deadlock in the 80th minute, after exploiting an organized attack and placing the ball in the net, giving his country the lead at a crucial time.
With the Brazilian team pushing forward in search of an equalizer, Norway exploited the spaces in the back lines, and Haaland returned to add the second goal in the 90th minute, confirming his country's superiority and taking a big step towards qualification.
In stoppage time, the referee awarded a second penalty for Brazil, which substitute Neymar da Silva successfully converted into a goal, reducing the deficit to 2-1, but time did not allow the Brazilian team to come back, ending the match with a historic win for Norway.
With this victory, Norway continues its remarkable journey in the tournament and will face the winner of the match between England and Mexico in the quarter-finals, while the Brazilian team bids farewell to the competition in the round of 16 in one of the biggest surprises of the current World Cup edition.
