Conservatives propose abolishing the GST on used cars to reduce the cost of living

Pierre Poilievre says the plan will save buyers hundreds of dollars and aims to address rising vehicle prices in Canada

Conservatives propose abolishing the GST on used cars to reduce the cost of living

Ottawa —
Canadian Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre announced a plan to eliminate the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on used cars, in a move the party says aims to ease the financial burden on Canadians and improve affordability of transportation.

The proposal was introduced through a private bill called the Used Car Tax Reduction Act, which stipulates exempting used vehicles from GST when purchased from authorized dealers.

The proposal comes at a time when used car prices have seen significant increases in recent years, making car ownership more difficult for many families, young people, and residents in rural areas who rely on vehicles for their daily commutes.

The Conservatives said the plan is based on a principle already applied to some resold assets, such as used homes, which are not subject to GST upon resale, considering that used cars should be treated the same way.

According to the party's estimates, the proposed tax exemption could save buyers about 5% of the used car's value, which could translate into significant savings when purchasing high-priced vehicles.

The party also called on provincial governments to take similar steps by eliminating provincial taxes on used cars, which could increase the amount of savings for consumers in some provinces.

The proposal is part of a broader package of economic policies put forward by the Conservatives under the title of addressing the cost of living crisis, at a time when pressures on Canadian families are increasing due to rising housing, transportation, and essential goods costs.

The bill is expected to spark debate in Parliament about its impact on government revenues and its effectiveness in reducing living costs, especially as economic challenges facing consumers across the country continue.
