Toronto —
Toronto police have charged a 12-year-old child with attempted murder, after allegedly hitting a police officer with a stolen vehicle during a security incident in the city.

The police said the incident occurred while officers were dealing with a vehicle believed to be stolen, before the police car or one of its officers was hit during an intervention attempt.

The injured officer was taken to the hospital for treatment, while authorities have not released full additional details about his condition or the circumstances of the confrontation.

The police arrested the child and filed criminal charges against him, including attempted murder, in a case subject to the Youth Justice Act, which prohibits publishing his name or any information that could reveal his identity.

The police continue to investigate the circumstances of the incident, including how the minor obtained the vehicle, and whether other people are involved.

The case highlights growing concerns about minors' involvement in serious crimes related to stolen vehicles, at a time when Toronto and other areas of Ontario face increasing challenges with car theft and related violence.
