Carney: The G7 no longer runs the world nor claims to do so

Canadian Prime Minister calls for a new realism in dealing with the international system ahead of the G7 summit

Carney: The G7 no longer runs the world nor claims to do so

Ottawa —
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said that the G7 no longer “runs the world or pretends to do so,” in a statement reflecting a more realistic view of the role of major industrial powers in an international system undergoing rapid transformations.

Carney's remarks came ahead of the G7 summit, at a time when challenges facing Western countries are increasing, from trade and security tensions to the rise of new economic and political powers outside the traditional Western framework.

Carney emphasized that the importance of the G7 lies not in its ability to impose its decisions on the world, but in its ability to coordinate among countries with shared values and interests, and to build practical alliances to deal with global crises.

His statements acknowledge that the balance of international power has changed, and that the G7 countries are no longer alone capable of setting the rules of economy, politics, and security as was the case in previous stages.

Carney's positions also reflect a Canadian trend towards strengthening the role of “middle powers” and building broader partnerships, especially with Europe, instead of relying solely on the traditional relationship with the United States.

The upcoming G7 summit is expected to be a test of this approach, with heavy files on the agenda including trade, energy, defense, Ukraine, the Middle East, and the future of the global economic system.

With this statement, Carney tries to present a new approach to Canada's role within Western alliances: not based on the assumption that the West can lead the world alone, but on building a more modest and realistic collective influence in a multipolar world.
