In one of the strongest matches of the 2026 World Cup so far, the Moroccan national team asserted its presence against its Brazilian counterpart, securing a valuable 1-1 draw in the opening of Group C, which also includes Scotland and Haiti.
Morocco entered the match with clear confidence, regaining much of the spirit it showed in the 2022 Qatar World Cup, applying high pressure on the Brazilian team from the first minutes. Bilal El Khannous almost opened the scoring early with a shot from the edge of the penalty area that the Brazilian defense blocked before it reached the net.
The Atlas Lions continued their dominance in midfield, with effective movements from Achraf Hakimi, Ibrahim Diaz, and Noussair Mazraoui, while Brazil started cautiously and seemed unable in the early minutes to impose their usual rhythm.
In the 20th minute, the Moroccan team translated their superiority into a wonderful goal after an organized counterattack, which began with a remarkable interception by Mazraoui, followed by a smart pass to Ibrahim Diaz, who set Ismail Saibari face to face with the goal. The latter scored a chipped shot that surprised Alisson Becker and settled in the net.
After the goal, Morocco tried to strengthen its lead, but Brazil returned to the match in the 32nd minute after a defensive error exploited by Vinicius Junior inside the penalty area, who fired a powerful shot to bring the match back to a draw.
In the second half, the Brazilian team entered more organized after tactical adjustments by coach Carlo Ancelotti, most notably activating the midfield and giving Raphinha more space on the right wing, which increased the pressure on the Moroccan defense.
Despite Brazil's relative superiority during some periods of the second half, the Moroccan team maintained its defensive cohesion, and goalkeeper Yassine Bounou excelled in stopping dangerous attempts, preventing Brazil from snatching the winning goal.
With this result, the Moroccan and Brazilian teams each earned a point at the start of their journey in Group C, in a match that confirmed that Morocco is still capable of competing with the world's top teams, and that their draw with Brazil was not a circumstantial result, but rather the fruit of organization, character, and clear tactical presence.
