Toronto —
The Toronto Fire Chief warned of a significant increase in lithium-ion battery fires, considering these incidents to be a serious public safety concern in the city.
These batteries are widely used in electric bikes, scooters, small mobility devices, phones, laptops, and home charging tools.
Fire teams said the risk increases when non-original batteries or chargers are used, or when devices are charged indoors for long periods, or near emergency exits and corridors, which could hinder escape during a fire.
The danger of lithium battery fires lies in their ability to ignite very quickly, releasing heat, smoke, and toxic gases, and they can reignite even after being extinguished.
Authorities urged residents not to charge electric bikes or scooters while sleeping or unattended, to use only approved chargers, and to stop immediately using any battery showing signs of swelling, leakage, strange odor, or abnormal heat increase.
They also emphasized the importance of not storing or charging devices near doors or stairs, so they do not become obstacles to exit in case of fire.
The warning comes after a series of recent incidents in Toronto, prompting fire teams to call on residents to be more cautious with devices that rely on rechargeable batteries.
