The President of the Syrian Arab Republic, Ahmed Al-Shara, arrived in New York today, Sunday, to participate in the work of the eightieth session of the United Nations General Assembly, in a historic step, as it is the first participation of a Syrian president since 1967.
Al-Shara's visit comes at a sensitive time witnessing intensive diplomatic developments related to the Middle East, including efforts to advance the peace process and regional security negotiations, amid international eyes watching the positions he will announce during his speech before the leaders and heads of state.
International Expectations from Al-Shara's Speech
Observers expect Al-Shara's speech to focus on:
Affirming Syrian sovereignty and rejecting any violation of the country's borders or airspace.
The stance on the Israeli security proposal being discussed through international mediation.
Calling for enhancing the Arab role in regional settlements and restoring Syria to an active position in the international system.
The humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where he is expected to express his country's solidarity with the Palestinian people and call for an end to violations.
Al-Shara is also expected to present his country's vision for the possibility of reviving the two-state solution track, emphasizing that any future agreements must guarantee the legitimate rights of the Arab peoples and mutual security in the region.
