The Middle East ignites over a tweet by Prince Ali bin Al Hussein about the UAE: Was it deleted or disappeared?
Published: August 27, 2020
Agencies : A tweet by the Jordanian prince Ali bin Al Hussein, on his verified Twitter account, in which he shared an article attacking the Emirati normalization with the occupation authorities, sparked a storm, and caused an uproar after it disappeared.
Multiple speculations spread about the fate of the tweet posted by Prince Ali, who is the half-brother of the Jordanian King Abdullah II.
While many saw the tweet as deleted and the content unavailable for browsing, another narrative doubted the matter.
According to the proponents of the second narrative, there is a possibility of manipulation of the tweet's content by Twitter's Middle East office, located in the Emirate of Dubai.
What increased many people's acceptance of this idea was that the tweet used to appear to some, if opened earlier. The possibility is also supported by precedents recorded on the global Twitter platform, from its Dubai office, along with criticisms directed at it by activists for the interference of Emirati arms controlling various posts conflicting with the agenda of the state hosting the office.

The article published by Prince Ali bin Al Hussein on his account was titled: “The Emirati-Israeli Agreement: A Major Breakthrough or Betrayal?”, and featured a picture of Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed, with the words “Traitor” and “Normalization is Betrayal.” The prince deleted the picture and only published the article link from the “Middle East Eye” website.
Since posting the tweet, the brother of the Jordanian king has faced wide attacks launched by Emirati and Saudi activists. On the other hand, many welcomed the tweet and Prince Ali bin Al Hussein’s stance.
It is noteworthy that Prince Ali stood by his sister Princess Haya in her dispute with Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, ruler of Dubai, supporting her with a tweet during the court sessions held in the UK.
Prince Ali bin Al Hussein holds the position of President of the West Asian Football Federation, and is the President of the Jordan Football Association. He is the son of King Hussein bin Talal and Queen Alia. He has held several military positions and the position of Vice President of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) for Asia from 2011 to 2015. He also founded the Asian Football Development Project in 2012, which he has chaired since its establishment.
