The decision by the International Football Federation to appoint Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić to officiate the 2026 World Cup final between Spain and Argentina has sparked a wave of controversy and criticism across sports and fan accounts, ahead of the highly anticipated match on Sunday evening at the New York–New Jersey stadium.
Vinčić, 46 years old, will become the first Slovenian referee to officiate a World Cup final in history, and the 23rd to take charge of the tournament final since its inception.
He will be assisted by his compatriots Tomaž Klančnik as the first assistant referee, and Andrej Kovacic as the second assistant referee, while Jordanian Adham Makhadmeh was appointed as the fourth official, and his compatriot Mohammed Al-Khalaf as the reserve assistant referee.
German Bastian Dankert will be responsible for the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology, supported by Colombian Nicolás Gallo and Qatari Khamis Al-Marri.
FIFA's Head of Referees Committee, Pierluigi Collina, confirmed that Vinčić’s performance during the tournament was the main factor behind granting him the responsibility of officiating the final match.
The Slovenian referee has officiated three matches in the current edition of the World Cup: the Brazil vs. Morocco match, the Jordan vs. Algeria group stage match, and the Mexico vs. Ecuador round of 32 match.
Criticism of his refereeing record
Despite FIFA’s confidence, the appointment was met with criticism from accounts specializing in refereeing analysis and fans, some of whom considered Vinčić’s performance during the European season not stable enough to manage the biggest match in world football.
Sports accounts recalled the Bayern Munich vs. Real Madrid match in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-finals last April, which saw Real Madrid player Eduardo Camavinga sent off after receiving a second yellow card in the final minutes.
The decision angered Real Madrid players and officials, who felt the foul did not warrant a red card, while the evaluation of the incident remains a subject of refereeing dispute and does not in itself prove the referee’s unsuitability to manage the final.
Vinčić has extensive experience in major matches, having previously officiated the 2022 Europa League final between Eintracht Frankfurt and Rangers, and the 2024 Champions League final between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund.
He also officiated the 2024 European Championship semi-final between Spain and France, a match that ended with Spain qualifying for the final.
The 2020 incident resurfaces
Media outlets and fan accounts have revisited an incident dating back to May 2020, when Vinčić was present at a location raided by police in the city of Bijeljina in Bosnia and Herzegovina as part of an operation targeting a suspected drug and prostitution network.
During the raid, police found drugs, weapons, and money, and detained several people present, including the Slovenian referee.
However, Vinčić was not accused of participating in any criminal activity, was questioned as a witness, and then released after it was proven he had no connection to the targeted network.
The referee later stated that he was in Bosnia to attend a business meeting and accepted an invitation to a lunch before finding himself at the location raided by police, describing accepting the invitation as a mistake he regrets.
Slovenian refereeing authorities at the time also confirmed that he was not a suspect and that no criminal proceedings were opened against him.
Therefore, linking his name to drugs or the criminal network without mentioning his exoneration and the absence of charges presents an incomplete and misleading picture of the incident.
A historic memory for Argentina
Vinčić previously officiated Argentina’s opening match in the 2022 World Cup against Saudi Arabia, which ended with a 2-1 victory for the Saudi team in one of the biggest surprises of the tournament.
Despite that loss, Argentina continued their journey to win the title in Qatar, before reaching the 2026 final to defend their cup against Spain.
Officiating a previous match that ended in a loss for one of the teams does not indicate bias or prior influence on the final’s result, but it added a fan dimension to the discussion surrounding his appointment.
As for Spain, they have not suffered defeat in the five matches Vinčić has officiated for them, achieving three wins and two draws under his refereeing leadership.
A final under exceptional scrutiny
The intense rivalry between Spain and Argentina places the refereeing team under close scrutiny in a match that brings together the World Cup holder with a team seeking to reclaim the cup for the first time since their sole triumph in 2010.
The match features some of the world’s top stars and is expected to witness intense clashes and significant fan and media pressure, making the referee’s ability to control the pace of the game and handle incidents inside the penalty area a decisive factor.
While critics believe Vinčić’s previous decisions raise doubts, his selection reflects the international referees committee’s confidence in his experience and performance in the tournament.
The final whistle will be the biggest test in his career and the opportunity that will determine whether previous criticisms remain part of the pre-match controversy or become a major issue after it ends.
