San Diego —
Five people were killed in a shooting targeting the Islamic Center in the city of San Diego, California, including three men and two suspects, according to police.
San Diego police said the attack took place inside the Islamic Center, which is the largest mosque in San Diego County, and also includes Al-Rashid School that offers lessons in Arabic language, Islamic studies, and the Quran for children.
The police explained that among the dead was a security guard at the mosque, noting that he helped save many lives before being killed during the attack.
According to preliminary information, the two suspects were teenagers, and they were found dead after the attack, while the police confirmed that the threat was contained and there is no longer any danger to the site.
Authorities are treating the incident as a hate crime, while investigations continue to determine the motives behind the attack, the backgrounds of the suspects, and their movements before the shooting.
The area around the center witnessed a wide security response, with children and staff evacuated from the building and moved to safe locations, while police cordoned off the area and opened an investigation with the participation of additional law enforcement agencies.
The attack caused widespread shock in the city, especially since it targeted a place of worship and an educational institution that includes children, which revived fears of escalating violence directed against places of worship and religious communities in the United States.
