Washington —
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has raised the warning level for the recall of millions of baby wipe packages sold at Target stores to Class I, the highest recall level, after confirming contamination with bacteria that may cause serious injuries, including death, in groups most vulnerable to health complications.
The administration explained that tests revealed the presence of Burkholderia cepacia and Burkholderia gladioli bacteria in some products, which are bacteria that can cause severe infections, especially in infants, newborns, and people with weakened immune systems.
The recall includes about 6.8 million packages of Up & Up brand baby wipes, including the fragrance-free version and the cucumber-scented version, which were sold at Target stores and through its online platform, with expiration dates extending until November 2028.
The recall was classified as Class I after health authorities determined there is a reasonable probability that using these products could lead to serious health consequences or death in some cases.
Investigations indicated that the manufacturing company and Target stores received several consumer complaints, including changes in the color of the wipes and cases of skin and eye irritation, in addition to reports of infections suspected to be linked to the use of the products, some of which are still under evaluation.
Authorities warned that Burkholderia bacteria are resistant to several antibiotics, which may make treating the infection more complicated, especially if it spreads to the bloodstream or causes lung infections in people at higher risk.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration urged all consumers to immediately stop using the recalled wipes and return them to Target stores for a refund, and to consult a doctor if any health symptoms suspected to be related to the use of these products appear.
