Canada Day… joy, challenge, and concerns… and yet it remains Canada!

Between inspiring achievements, troubling challenges, and a homeland that still deserves us to preserve its most beautiful aspects

Canada Day… joy, challenge, and concerns… and yet it remains Canada!

Published: July 1, 2026

On the first of July every year, Canadians celebrate their national day, cities are decorated with flags, squares fill with celebrations, and fireworks light up the sky of a country that has, over decades, built an exceptional human, political, and economic experience, making it a destination for millions of people who came carrying their dreams, seeking security, stability, dignity, and a fair chance for a new beginning.

However, this year’s Canada Day comes differently.

It is a day where joy mixes with pride, challenge with responsibility, and worries with hope, in a scene that reflects the reality of nations; they do not live at a single pace but are shaped by their successes as well as their ability to face their crises.

Joy is present in all its details.

Canada is currently experiencing an exceptional event as it hosts the World Cup matches, participating with its national team that succeeded in presenting an honorable image, confirming that Canadian sports have become a strong force on the international stage. It is a moment when Canadians feel that their country is no longer just a host of global events but has become a partner in creating them, capable of competing with the greats on its soil and among its fans.

But nations are not measured by moments of joy alone.

Canada today faces complex political and economic challenges, starting with the future of the trade relationship with the United States of America and its implications on the economy, investment, and the labor market, and not ending with the return of discussions related to the referendum and separation, carrying questions about the future of the Canadian federation and its national unity in a world increasingly divided.

The greatest concern, however, is what citizens experience in the details of their daily lives.

The high cost of living, rising housing and essential goods prices, declining job opportunities, and the closure of an increasing number of small and medium enterprises are all factors that have made many families look to the future with legitimate anxiety. With every economic crisis, the spaces exploited by organized crime expand, and fraud, vehicle thefts, and exploitation of youth increase, turning the economic crisis into a social and security challenge that requires comprehensive treatment, not temporary solutions.

What is also worrying is that Canada, known for decades as a model of pluralism and respect for human rights, occasionally witnesses unfortunate incidents that can be described as a slide into the mire of racism, hatred, and narrowing of freedoms. Although these manifestations do not represent Canadian society, they serve as a reminder that great values remain great only if their owners defend them and reject any attempt to undermine them, regardless of their source or justification.

Nevertheless…

It remains Canada.

It remains the country that gave millions the chance to start anew. It remains the state whose institutions are still strong, whose law is respected, and whose society is capable of correcting its mistakes and acknowledging its challenges. This may be precisely the secret of its strength; it does not claim perfection, but it has the ability to review itself whenever the compass deviates.

Love of the homeland does not mean overlooking its mistakes, nor does criticizing it mean abandoning it. The greatest forms of belonging are to rejoice in its achievements, face its challenges with courage, and defend the values that made it an exceptional country in the eyes of its children and all who chose it as a home for life.

On Canada Day, we do not celebrate the land alone, but the idea upon which it was founded; the idea that a person, regardless of origin, language, religion, or culture, deserves a fair chance, a dignified life, and mutual respect.

Happy Canada Day…

And every year it is stronger in its unity, more beautiful in its diversity, fairer in its law, more humane in its values, tougher in facing crime, and more keen to keep security as the hallmark of life, justice as the shield of society, and the human being as the most precious in this homeland, so that Canada remains as the world loves it… a country that gives hope, not a country that loses it.
