Trump escalates against Canada over dairy and the "Buy American" law
The American president accuses Ottawa of imposing "unacceptable" tariffs on dairy and exploiting exemptions to bypass American content.
Published: February 10, 2026
Donald Trump said that the tariffs imposed by Canada on American dairy products "have been unacceptable for many years," considering that they "expose our farmers to significant financial risks."
In a related context, Trump renewed his criticisms of the exemptions granted to Canada during the previous American administration, saying: "President Barack Obama foolishly gave them an exemption that allowed them to bypass the 'Buy American' law and not use any American products, including our steel."
Trump's statements come as part of a broader escalation towards Canada in trade and infrastructure files, where Washington points to the need to review existing arrangements that it sees as harming American industries and producers, while no immediate comment has been issued from Ottawa on these accusations.
