Health authorities are monitoring contacts after the return of passengers from the ship that witnessed a deadly virus outbreak

Toronto —
Health authorities in Ontario have confirmed a third person is under isolation and monitoring due to the Hanta virus, after it was found that the new case belongs to a resident in the Peel area.
These developments come following the outbreak of the virus on a cruise ship that crossed the Atlantic Ocean, where deaths and infections were recorded among passengers, prompting health authorities in several countries to implement isolation measures and contact tracing.
The health authorities stated that the isolated person in Peel was connected to the cruise associated with the outbreak, and their health status is currently being monitored alongside tracking the people they came into contact with after returning to Canada.
Ontario had previously announced two other isolation cases linked to the same cruise, while authorities continue to assess any potential risks to public health.
The authorities confirm that the risk of community transmission remains low, but they are handling the cases cautiously due to the nature of the virus and the severity of its associated complications.
The Hanta virus is known as a rare disease usually transmitted through rodents or their droppings, but international authorities are monitoring the possibility that the current outbreak is linked to the "Andes" strain, a rare strain that can be transmitted to a limited extent between humans.
Initial symptoms of the virus include fever, muscle pain, and fatigue, while severe cases may develop into serious respiratory problems and failure of some body functions.
Public health teams in Canada continue to coordinate with international authorities to track passengers and contacts, amid ongoing investigations to determine the source of the infection and how it spread on the ship.
