The shortage of skilled labor in Canada is worsening.. Experts describe the numbers as "shocking"

Experts in the Canadian labor market have said that the shortage of labor in the trades and technical skills sector is continuously deteriorating, threatening vital sectors in the Canadian economy, most notably construction, energy, and services.

Diane Lund, CEO of the Skilled Trades College, stated that “the situation is getting worse day by day,” pointing out that the official figures regarding the shortage of skilled labor have become “shocking.”

According to the latest government data, Canada needs to employ hundreds of thousands of workers in skilled trades over the next five years, including electrical work, plumbing, carpentry, welding, and renewable energy technologies.

Experts attribute this shortage to a number of factors, including the retirement of a large generation of workers, lack of training, and young people’s reluctance to pursue trades in favor of academic or technical paths. The pace of construction and urban development projects in major cities has also accelerated, increasing the demand for these skills.

Specialists warned that failing to address this shortage will affect the pace of housing and infrastructure projects, at a time when the country is suffering from a housing crisis and inflation in housing prices.

Lund called for urgent reforms in the education and training system, encouraging more young people, including newcomers, to engage in vocational training programs, emphasizing that “the salaries are rewarding, and the opportunities are wide, but the stereotypical view of trades needs to change.”
