Quebec cancels the requirement to hire a lawyer for those wishing to immigrate
Published: September 26, 2022
Quebec cancels the law allowing the use of a lawyer for those wishing to immigrate according to the Ministry of Immigration in the Francophone province, as the right to use a lawyer enjoyed by those wishing to immigrate to Quebec dates back to 1984.
Since December 2021, the immigration procedure guide states that an applicant who has been called for an interview must first request permission from the Quebec Ministry of Immigration if they wish to obtain legal assistance.
"This request must contain convincing reasons justifying the presence of a lawyer," according to the immigration guide.
Many lawyers in Quebec criticized the cancellation of this law, which they considered "a violation of the principle of procedural fairness."
They emphasized the necessity of amending this law but not abandoning it altogether, as applicants wishing to immigrate to Quebec should enjoy their right to use a lawyer according to the 1984 law.
