Montreal —
The Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood in Montreal witnessed a bloody day after an armed attack that resulted in the death of a police officer and a civilian, and the injury of another police officer, before the authorities announced neutralizing the suspect and ending the immediate danger.
The incident began when the Montreal police received a report about an armed and dangerous person near the intersection of Courtrai and Trans Island streets, prompting them to carry out a wide security intervention in the area.
As the situation developed, the authorities issued an emergency alert calling on residents to stay inside their homes, close their doors, and stay away from the vicinity of the security operation, while police forces spread densely in the nearby streets.
During the intervention, police officers were shot at, resulting in the death of one and the injury of another, and a civilian was also killed in the incident. The police later confirmed that the suspect was neutralized and that the weapon used was seized at the scene.
Montreal Police Commissioner, Fadi Dager, said the investigation is still in its early stages, and the motives for the attack are not yet known, noting that investigators are working on reconstructing the sequence of events and collecting evidence from the scene.
The attack led to the closure of the surrounding area for hours, amid a heavy presence of emergency units and police, while residents were asked to avoid the area until the securing and inspection operations were completed.
The incident is considered one of the most serious attacks on the police force in Montreal in recent years, and it sparked widespread sadness and concern, especially with the death of a police officer while performing his duty.
