The Jordanian national team began its historic first participation in the World Cup with a 3-1 loss to the Austrian team, in the match held as part of the opening round of Group 10 of the 2026 World Cup.
The Jordanian team performed well for long periods of the match and managed to keep pace with the Austrian team, but paid the price for lack of experience in major occasions and some crucial mistakes that changed the course of the match.
Austria opened the scoring through Romano Schmidt in the 20th minute, before Ali Alwan succeeded in scoring the equalizer for Jordan in the 50th minute, writing the first goal in the history of the Nashama team in the World Cup finals.
While the Jordanian team was looking to capitalize on the equalizing moment, the harsh blow came in the 76th minute when Yazan Al Arab scored an own goal, giving Austria the lead again.
In injury time, Marko Arnautović settled the result with a third goal from a penalty kick, granting Austria three valuable points at the start of their journey.
With this result, the Jordanian team remained without points in the group, while Austria advanced with three points behind Argentina on goal difference, after the latter won against Algeria with a clean 3-0 victory.
The Jordanian team will face an anticipated Arab confrontation against Algeria in the second round, in a match that could be pivotal for both teams to maintain hopes of qualifying for the next round.
