Ottawa —
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he reviewed the draft interim agreement between the United States and Iran, considering the understanding an important opportunity to de-escalate in the Middle East and open a new path for diplomacy.
Carney's statements came after the announcement of an understanding aimed at ending the war, lifting the US naval blockade on Iran, and reopening the Strait of Hormuz for navigation, a step described as potentially changing the course of the regional crisis if fully implemented.
Carney confirmed that the conflict was "worth it" in terms of the outcome that led to a broader ceasefire, but he also emphasized the need to build on the agreement and not be content with just the political declaration.
Canada views the agreement as an opportunity to establish a ceasefire, protect civilians, calm energy markets, and prevent the expansion of confrontations to other fronts in the region.
Despite Canadian welcome, there remain open questions regarding implementation details, verification mechanisms, the future of the Iranian nuclear file, and regional security arrangements.
Carney's position comes alongside moves at the G7 summit to support an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon and consider the US-Iran agreement a historic opportunity to ease broader tensions in the region.
