From the ashes of war to the cold of exile: A call for mercy to the people of Gaza in Canada

Published: October 27, 2025

At a time when many believe that surviving the war is the end of the tragedy, many Gaza families who recently arrived in Canada are living new chapters of pain, but this time of a different kind. After surviving the brutal war waged by the occupation on the Gaza Strip, they found themselves in another battle with alienation, isolation, and an uncertain future.

The pain of alienation after the fire

In a meeting that brought together a number of these families, words came from hearts weighed down with both longing and disappointment. They spoke about the confusion they live in a new country, and about the difficult path that was not paved before them as they had imagined. Instead of a safe beginning and a stable life, they found themselves facing complex difficulties in education, housing, and social and psychological adaptation.

What worries them most today is the educational future of their children, which is considered the fundamental pillar for any new beginning. The complicated procedures that require a considerable delay for a student who wants to join their studies and is very eager for them after being away for a long time are enough to break their will before anything else, along with the high tuition fees, all obstacles that weigh heavily on families who came to start from scratch and have lost all elements of security in their journey of survival.

A call for mercy and responsibility

From here, I appeal to charitable and humanitarian organizations, as well as governmental and official bodies in Canada, to look with mercy and responsibility at the conditions of these families.

These cases should be treated as humanitarian exceptions, and the financial and procedural burdens should be alleviated for them, especially regarding the education of their children in schools and universities. It is not fair for them to be treated as international students when they do not have the minimum financial capacity after losing everything and now living without any government support or assistance. They are in the process of recovering from a major shock, so do not increase their pain, but be a gateway of hope for them towards a safe and stable future.

Legal clarity and a humanitarian horizon

These families should also not be left in a state of legal ambiguity regarding their status in Canada, without a clear determination of their future residence in Canada. Will they be granted permanent residency, or will they have to apply for asylum given that returning to Gaza may not be the best option for them at the moment? Many of them do not know the correct procedures to follow, which makes them vulnerable to fraud and exploitation that could destroy what remains of their hope.

Supporting them is not just a passing charity, but a humanitarian and moral duty that reflects the essence of justice and mercy that Canadian society prides itself on. These people did not choose alienation voluntarily, but chose survival from death, so be a support for them in life.
