In an unprecedented historic achievement, the Egyptian national team secured its seat in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup for the first time in its history, after defeating its Australian counterpart in a penalty shootout with a score of (4-3), following the end of regular and extra time with a positive draw (1-1), in the match that brought the two teams together at the Dallas stadium in the state of Texas, USA.

The Egyptian team entered the match with an attacking spirit and great confidence, despite the strong start of the Australian team, which almost opened the scoring early in the fifth minute, when one of its shots hit the crossbar, before Rami Rabia intervened two minutes later to save Mostafa Shobeir's goal from a dangerous one-on-one and kept the net clean.

The Egyptian team did not wait long to respond, as Imam Ashour succeeded in the thirteenth minute in scoring the leading goal after he rose to a cross and skillfully headed it into the net, giving the Pharaohs an early advantage in the match.

The Egyptian team continued its pressure seeking to strengthen the result, as Omar Marmoush almost added the second goal in the 18th minute, but his shot hit the foot of one of the defenders and went out of the field, before a goal scored by Mostafa “Zico” was canceled two minutes later due to offside, ending the first half with Egypt leading by one goal to nil.

At the beginning of the second half, Omar Marmoush had a golden opportunity to strengthen the result after he was one-on-one with the Australian goalkeeper, but he unexpectedly shot the ball outside the goal, missing a chance that could have facilitated the Egyptian team's task.

In the 55th minute, the Australian team returned to the atmosphere of the match after Mohamed Hany scored an own goal while trying to clear a cross, making the score (1-1) and increasing the excitement of the match.

Head coach Hossam Hassan made several changes to activate the team's ranks, bringing on Hossam Abdel Meguid and Haitham Hassan instead of Hamdy Fathi and Mostafa “Zico”, and also fielded Mahmoud Hassan “Trezeguet” instead of Karim Hafez, in an attempt to regain the lead.

Despite the mutual attempts during the remaining regular time and then in the extra halves, neither team was able to score the decisive goal, leading the match to a penalty shootout that favored the Egyptian team with a score of (4-3), amid the brilliance of the Pharaohs' players and goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir in the decisive moments.

With this victory, the Egyptian team continues to write a new chapter in its football history, having reached the round of 16 for the first time in its World Cup participations, confirming its development and ability to compete with the top teams in the tournament.

The Egyptian team qualified for this round after finishing second in Group G with five points, collected from a win over New Zealand (3-1), and draws with Belgium and Iran with a score of (1-1) in each match, while the Australian team reached the same round after finishing second in Group D with four points, following its win over Turkey (2-0), a draw with Paraguay (0-0), and a loss to the United States (2-0).

The Egyptian team awaits in the round of 16 the winner of the match between Argentina and Cape Verde, which will be held in the city of Miami, in a confrontation that will determine the Pharaohs' next competitor in their historic World Cup journey.
