The Moroccan national team reached the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup, after an exciting victory over the Netherlands in a 3-2 penalty shootout, following a 1-1 draw at the end of regular and extra time in a strong match in the round of 32.
The first half was balanced between the two teams, with clear caution in offensive build-up and mutual attempts to control the midfield, without either side managing to score.
In the second half, the Netherlands took the lead through Cody Gakpo in the 72nd minute, putting Morocco under great pressure as the match neared its end. But the Atlas Lions refused to give up, and Issa Diop succeeded in equalizing with a deadly header in the 90+1 minute, after a precise cross from Soufiane Talbi.
The match extended into two extra periods, which saw Moroccan dominance and dangerous chances, most notably Soufiane Rahimi's attempt that was saved by goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, before the match went to penalties.
From the penalty spot, the Moroccan team showed composure and won the series 3-2, eliminating the Dutch team and continuing their historic journey in the World Cup.
With this victory, Morocco will face Canada in the round of 16, in an anticipated match that carries a special significance between an Arab African team continuing to make history, and a Canadian team experiencing its best participation in the World Cup.
The match also witnessed a historic milestone for Morocco, as it raised its total to 27 matches in World Cup finals, becoming the Arab and African team with the most matches played in the history of the tournament, while captain Achraf Hakimi celebrated his 100th international match wearing the Atlas Lions jersey.
