Devastating floods hit Ksar El Kebir and put northern Morocco on high alert

Published: January 29, 2026

Moroccan northern regions, led by the city of Ksar El Kebir, are witnessing severe weather disturbances that caused widespread flooding following heavy and continuous rainfall, leading to a rise in water levels and flooding of several neighborhoods and homes.
Videos circulated on social media platforms showed alarming scenes of rising water levels inside the city, where floods inundated residential homes and caused cars to be swept away and float on the water surface, at a time when the situation worsened due to the release of the Wadi Al-Makhazin dam's load after its filling rate exceeded 100 percent.
Field efforts and urgent preventive measures

In response to these developments, local and regional authorities intensified their field interventions to protect the threatened residential neighborhoods. The regional director of equipment and water in Larache province, Alamin Bouasem, reported that work is underway to build temporary protective barriers aimed at preventing the leakage of Loukkos River waters towards the residential areas most vulnerable to flooding, as part of precautionary measures aimed at preserving lives and protecting property.
The same official explained that the vigilance and monitoring committee, headed by the governor of Larache province, arrived in Ksar El Kebir city since Tuesday to closely follow the situation and coordinate efforts among various stakeholders.
For his part, the government spokesperson, Mustafa Baytas, confirmed that the government is closely monitoring the developments in the northern kingdom, especially in Ksar El Kebir city, noting that an official meeting is expected to be held on Friday, chaired by the Minister of Interior Abdelouafi Laftit, with the participation of various concerned sectors, to take the necessary measures and mobilize the required capabilities to deal with the repercussions of the floods.
Raising the state of alert and warnings to residents

The regional authorities in Larache province announced raising the highest state of alert in Ksar El Kebir city, calling on residents, especially those living in lower floors and low-lying areas, to temporarily evacuate their homes and move to safe places amid the continued rise in water levels.
Civil protection personnel and local authorities continue their interventions to monitor the situation and secure black spots that pose a danger to lives and property, with enhanced surveillance on the banks of Loukkos River.
Expectations of continued bad weather

In the same context, the General Directorate of Meteorology warned of the continuation of atmospheric instability starting Thursday, due to active Atlantic disturbances, whose effects are expected to continue until early next week. It indicated that these disturbances may cause heavy rains and stormy winds, in addition to a noticeable drop in temperatures, especially in northern areas and highlands, which warns of the continuation of flood-related risks in the coming days.
