A Canadian tourist was killed and another injured after a shooting carried out by an armed man inside the Teotihuacan Pyramids archaeological site near Mexico City, in an incident that caused widespread shock among visitors and authorities.
According to initial data, the attacker climbed to the top of one of the pyramids before opening fire on the tourists present at the site, resulting in the death of a Canadian woman and the injury of several people, including another Canadian tourist.
Authorities reported that the attack also resulted in injuries to several other people of different nationalities, some by gunfire and others while trying to flee, at a time when large numbers of visitors were present at the site.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the attacker acted alone before committing suicide at the scene of the incident, while security forces began evacuation and securing operations immediately after the attack.
The archaeological area is one of the most prominent tourist destinations in Mexico, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors annually, which increased the impact of the incident that occurred in broad daylight and among dense tourist gatherings.
Mexican authorities are still continuing to investigate the circumstances and motives of the attack, in coordination with diplomatic entities to follow up on the conditions of the injured and provide support to the families of the victims.
