Canada recalls "Dubai" chocolate product due to potential Salmonella contamination and health warnings for consumers

Published: August 7, 2025

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced on Tuesday the recall of a chocolate product bearing the famous "Dubai" brand, due to a potential risk of contamination with Salmonella bacteria, as a precautionary measure that attracted widespread attention given the spread of this product in Canadian and global markets.

The agency explained in an official statement that the recall decision came after laboratory test results confirmed contamination of pistachio and kunafa chocolate with milk, which prompted the company "Distribution Bonbons JJ Candy" to recall 145-gram chocolate packages that were sold online and in the province of Quebec.

The agency confirmed that no health cases have been reported so far as a result of consuming the contaminated product, but it urged consumers to dispose of it immediately or return it to the point of purchase. It also urged anyone suspected of having symptoms of food poisoning to consult a healthcare provider.

This procedure comes as part of an ongoing food monitoring campaign that may include recalling additional products, according to the agency, which confirmed that it is following up with the concerned companies to ensure the removal of all contaminated quantities from the markets.

Salmonella Risk

Food contamination with Salmonella is considered one of the most dangerous types of food poisoning, especially since the bacteria do not necessarily show clear signs of spoilage on the food. The infection usually causes symptoms such as fever, vomiting, nausea, stomach cramps, and diarrhea, and it can be serious for the most vulnerable groups health-wise, such as children, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems.

Legal Dispute in Germany over the "Dubai" Brand

In a related context, "Dubai" chocolate witnessed a legal battle in Germany earlier this year, after the Cologne court issued a ruling banning the "Aldi Süd" chain from selling a counterfeit version of the original product. The lawsuit was based on a complaint from German businessman Andreas Wilmers, the official importer of the chocolate from the UAE, after receiving complaints from consumers regarding differences in quality and taste.
