Ottawa —

Canadian health authorities continue to monitor individuals who returned to the country after being linked to the outbreak of Hantavirus on the cruise ship “MV Hondius,” while several cases are under isolation and precautionary medical follow-up.
Public health teams are tracking passengers and contacts who returned to Canada after the cruise that witnessed deaths and infections with Hantavirus, amid monitoring measures extending for weeks due to the virus’s relatively long incubation period.
Follow-up and isolation cases have been recorded in Ontario and Quebec, including individuals showing symptoms related to the virus, while health authorities confirm that the risk of transmission to the general population remains low so far.
The current outbreak raises wide health interest because the strain suspected to be linked to the cases is “Andes,” a rare strain known to be the only one capable of limited human-to-human transmission, unlike most types of Hantavirus which usually transmit through rodents or their droppings.
The cruise turned into a health crisis after cases of illness appeared among passengers and several deaths occurred, prompting international authorities to carry out extensive evacuations and health follow-up for travelers who dispersed to several countries after the trip ended.
Hantavirus is known as a rare but potentially severe disease, with symptoms usually starting with fever, fatigue, and muscle aches resembling influenza, before developing in some cases into severe respiratory complications or kidney and lung failure.
There is currently no direct antiviral treatment, and care depends on intensive medical support and respiratory and circulatory function support, making early diagnosis a critical factor in survival chances.
Health authorities say that most historical Hantavirus infections have been linked to exposure to rodents or their droppings in enclosed or rural areas, but the current outbreak has sparked exceptional interest due to suspected transmission among some passengers inside the ship.
While health monitoring continues, the competent authorities confirm that the situation does not indicate a widespread epidemic risk, but they are cautiously following developments due to the nature of the virus, the severity of some of its strains, and the high mortality rates associated with them.
