Foreign Minister Anita Anand reiterated that the Canadian government was not part of the military attacks on Iran, and that it did not receive prior notification of any strikes or military operations in the region, adding that Canada does not intend to participate in any combat operations against Tehran.

Anand explained in a post on her official page on “X” that Canada’s position is clear and firm:
“Canada was not a party to the strikes on Iran, we were not informed about them, and we do not intend to be part of any military operation.”
She confirmed that the Canadian government sees diplomatic and peaceful solutions as the best way to resolve regional disputes, and that this approach is what it presents in its communications with its counterparts in Middle Eastern and Gulf countries.

Canada’s position on the current crisis

Anand confirmed that Ottawa opposes military escalation and is working towards de-escalation through diplomacy, stressing that Canadian foreign policy is based on respecting international law and protecting civilians in conflicts rather than military escalation.
She explained that Canada urges all parties to exercise restraint, and called for opening channels for effective dialogue between the conflicting parties to avoid the expansion of the conflict. She also confirmed that the discussions she held with foreign ministers and representatives from Gulf and Middle Eastern countries focused on this approach, and on the necessity of maintaining regional stability and securing the lives of civilians.

Response to concerns and potential roles

The minister’s statements received attention from international and local institutions, especially in light of the rapid field developments that included strikes and missiles on targets in Iran, and military responses from several parties in the region. Canada, as Anand confirmed, considers dialogue and negotiation the most effective means to reduce losses and protect peace and security in the Middle East.
The minister also emphasized that Ottawa will continue to closely monitor the situation, affirming that any Canadian role in the military conflict is not on the table at all, and that the priority will always remain peace and political solutions.
