Canada approves first generic version of Ozempic for diabetes treatment

The decision opens the door to wider competition in semaglutide drugs amid increasing demand for diabetes and weight loss treatments

Canada approves first generic version of Ozempic for diabetes treatment

Ottawa —
The Canadian Ministry of Health has approved the first generic version of the drug Ozempic, a step that paves the way for lower-cost alternatives to enter the semaglutide drug market, one of the most in-demand treatments for type 2 diabetes.

The approval concerns a generic version of the active ingredient semaglutide, which is the same drug used in Ozempic developed by Novo Nordisk. The treatment works within a class of drugs known as GLP-1, primarily used to improve blood sugar control in diabetic patients, and is widely sought after due to its weight loss effects.

The new approval is expected to increase competition in the Canadian market, especially with additional applications anticipated from other companies seeking to launch similar versions of semaglutide in the coming period.

The entry of generic versions may reduce costs for patients and health insurance systems, although the actual price reduction will depend on the number of companies entering the market, pricing policies, and drug coverage in the provinces.

This step comes at a time when the world is witnessing increasing demand for GLP-1 drugs, whether for diabetes treatment or weight management, making this class of drugs a major focus of competition among pharmaceutical companies.

Canadian health authorities are expected to monitor the safety and efficacy of the new version after its launch, as is standard with generic drugs, to ensure it meets quality, efficacy, and safety standards.
