Cairo —
For about two weeks now, an intensive round of consultations has been ongoing in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, between mediators and parties concerned with the Gaza file, in an attempt to overcome the main obstacle that still hinders reaching a final agreement, which is the mechanism for dealing with the weapons of the Palestinian factions and the future of the military structure in the sector.
According to circulated information, the current discussions focus on a roadmap that includes gradual security and political arrangements aimed at implementing the requirements of the next phase, alongside measures related to a ceasefire, sector management, and restoring stability to it.
The talks have witnessed progress in some aspects, as the Palestinian factions have shown readiness to deal with the heavy weapons file within the framework of arrangements supervised by the Palestinian authorities specialized in managing the sector, but disagreements still persist regarding other issues related to tunnels, military manufacturing workshops, and implementation and monitoring mechanisms.
In return, the factions link any additional steps to the start of implementing parallel measures including stopping military operations, withdrawing from areas that have witnessed military expansion, opening crossings, facilitating the entry of aid and essential materials, along with enabling the new civil administration to carry out its tasks inside the sector.
Data indicates that mediators continue working on formulating a middle-ground formula that allows narrowing the gap between the positions of the different parties, benefiting from some positive indicators that have appeared in recent days.
This round of negotiations is considered one of the most sensitive rounds since the start of efforts aimed at ending the war, due to its connection to security and political files that are considered fundamental issues for all parties.
While diplomatic circles talk about relative progress in some tracks, reaching a final agreement still requires addressing a number of complex issues, amid continued reliance on the role of mediators in bringing viewpoints closer and reaching an understanding that opens the door to a new phase of calm and restoring stability in the Gaza Strip.
