The African Football Confederation announced the crowning of the Morocco national team as the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations champions, following an official decision by the Appeals Committee that considered the Senegal national team the loser of the final match with a score of 3-0.
The decision came in light of the events witnessed during the final match, which included a controversial situation in the last minutes after a penalty was awarded to the Morocco team, followed by a temporary withdrawal by the Senegal team before the resumption of play.
Decisive decision from the Appeals Committee
The Appeals Committee confirmed that the behavior of the Senegal team falls under violations of Articles 82 and 84 of the tournament regulations, which required the application of administrative penalties and considering them the losers of the match.
The committee also decided to cancel the previous ruling issued by the Disciplinary Committee and accept the appeal submitted by the Moroccan Federation, officially confirming the result in favor of Morocco.
Penalties and discipline
The decision also included amendments to several penalties related to the match, where:
A disciplinary violation was confirmed against player Ismail Sibhari with a reduction in the suspension penalty
Some financial fines imposed on the Moroccan Federation were reduced
Other fines related to behaviors during the match were maintained, including incidents linked to video technology
An exciting end to an exceptional tournament
The final match witnessed great excitement, as the Morocco team missed a penalty in the dying moments, before the Senegal team scored a goal during extra time, in a match that remained open to controversy until the final decision was issued.
This decision represents a decisive turning point in the course of the tournament, as it transferred the title from the field to the corridors of legal committees, in one of the most controversial endings in the history of the Africa Cup of Nations.
