Published: October 7, 2024
The Reel World Festival in Canada announced the selection of the film "Words Never Spoken" – which Al Jazeera Documentary is co-producing – to participate in the official competition for feature films in its 24th edition this October.
The film is produced by Lebanese-Canadian Ryan Zouckerman and directed by Canadian Josiane Blanc, and it tells the story of comedian José Peranian, who spent the first 20 years of his life avoiding speaking at all costs due to his severe stuttering that often embarrassed him with others. However, he decides to embark on a unique mission to heal from trauma and overcome adversity by facing audiences from the stage until he becomes, over the years, an articulate speaker who inspires listeners with his discussions about challenge and perseverance.
José travels to his homeland of Lebanon to reconcile with his past and confront his family with the conversations he never dared to have before.
Al Jazeera Documentary participated in the film from its early production stages when the team met at the RIDM festival in Montreal in 2019, where the team presented the film project to the audience attending the festival. This is the first film in which the documentary collaborates with the team.
It is noted that the Reel World Festival is dedicated to Canadian filmmakers from various ethnicities and cultural backgrounds. It takes place annually in Toronto in October each year.
