Warnings of increased risks of child trafficking with the approach of the 2026 World Cup
Child safety expert calls for enhanced prevention and monitoring as Canada prepares to welcome large numbers of visitors
Published: June 7, 2026
Ottawa —
A child safety expert warned of the potential increase in trafficking and exploitation risks during the 2026 World Cup period, as Canadian host cities prepare to welcome large numbers of fans and visitors.
The expert said that major sporting events may create an environment exploited by human traffickers due to increased travel movement, higher demand for accommodation and services, and the influx of visitors to major cities within a short period.
The warning specifically includes children and adolescents who are more vulnerable to exploitation, whether online or through networks targeting vulnerable groups around major events.
Canada is hosting matches in Toronto and Vancouver as part of the tournament organized jointly with the United States and Mexico, increasing the need for security and social coordination between police, schools, local communities, hotels, and the transportation sector.
The expert called for early awareness campaigns, training workers in sectors dealing with visitors to detect worrying signs, in addition to strengthening rapid reporting mechanisms for suspected cases.
She also emphasized that preparations for the World Cup should not be limited to stadiums, transportation, and tourism, but must include protecting children and vulnerable groups from any attempts at exploitation.
These warnings come at a time when security preparations for the tournament are expanding, amid expectations that World Cup matches will attract millions of fans to North American cities.
