The situation in Libya is complicated and divided among more than one government, factions, and political and armed groups since the fall of Gaddafi.
Libyan media reported on Monday, citing a government source, the dismissal of Foreign Minister Najla Mangoush following her meeting with Israeli counterpart Eli Cohen.

Reuters quoted a government source as saying that "Libyan National Unity Government Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh dismissed the foreign minister following her meeting with her Israeli counterpart."

Earlier, Dbeibeh referred Mangoush for investigation due to the meeting, which was the first ever between senior diplomats from Libya and Israel.

Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen met with Najla Mangoush in Rome last week.

Cohen stated that he discussed the importance of preserving the Jewish community's heritage in Libya, including the renovation of synagogues and cemeteries.

The talks also covered potential Israeli aid in humanitarian issues, agriculture, and water management, according to the Israeli foreign ministry.

Meanwhile, the Libyan foreign ministry sought to downplay the significance of the meeting, describing it as an "informal and spontaneous meeting during an encounter with the Italian foreign minister."

It stated in a statement that the meeting between Najla Mangoush and Cohen did not include "any discussions, agreements, or consultations."

The announcement of the meeting on Sunday sparked scattered protests in Tripoli and other towns in western Libya.

Protesters stormed the foreign ministry headquarters to condemn the meeting, while others attacked and set fire to the Prime Minister's residence in Tripoli, according to local reports.

In the town of Zawiya, protesters burned the Israeli flag, while others carried the Palestinian flag.

Protests also erupted in the city of Misrata, Dbeibeh's stronghold, according to footage circulated on social media.

For its part, the House of Representatives - based in the eastern part of the country - criticized the meeting, describing it as a "legal and moral crime." The council called for an emergency session on Monday in the city of Benghazi in eastern Libya.

In Israel, Yair Lapid, the foreign minister and former prime minister, criticized Cohen for announcing the sensitive meeting.
