The book "2050: Ice War" arrives in Genoa amid escalating competition over the Arctic

Genoa, Italy is preparing to host the presentation of the book «2050: Ice War» by the authors Giovanni Tonini and Cecilia Sandroni, at a time when indicators are increasing that the scenarios discussed in the work are shifting from a theoretical framework to an accelerating geopolitical reality.
The book is scheduled to be presented on March 27, 2026, within the campus of the European School of Economics in Genoa, in an event that goes beyond the traditional cultural nature to become a platform for discussion about the major transformations the world is witnessing, foremost among them the international competition in the Arctic region.
The book offers an in-depth reading of the rapid changes in the polar environment, focusing on the melting of ice and the opening of new sea routes, accompanied by a race among countries to access strategic natural resources, including energy and rare minerals.
The work presents an approach that goes beyond the environmental dimension of climate change, placing it in a broader context as a structural factor affecting the balance of global powers, supply chains, and the military strategies of major countries during the twenty-first century.
The theses presented in the book indicate that the Arctic is no longer a remote area, but has become a central arena for reshaping the international system, where economic interests intersect with security and legal considerations, amid increasing signs of competition and armament.
This vision gains additional importance in light of current international tensions, which reinforce the hypothesis that control over polar regions may become one of the most prominent future lines of conflict, especially with the declining effectiveness of traditional international frameworks in containing crises.
The anticipated event will witness the participation of a number of academic figures, alongside the authors and the polar explorer Nani Acquaroni, in an open discussion about the future of the polar region and its global implications.
The book is based on extensive research work involving young researchers within an international program, and includes 19 analytical chapters supported by extensive scientific references, addressing issues of ice melting, new trade routes, competition among major powers, as well as the increasing military presence in the region.
The work concludes that the transformations in the Arctic represent an indicator of a deeper change in the structure of the international system, where conflict is no longer limited to traditional geography but has extended to areas that until recently were outside the calculations of direct competition.
In this context, the central thesis of the book emerges: that ice melting not only opens new trade routes but also opens doors to new conflicts, in a world where transformations are accelerating and areas of friction are increasing.
