Ottawa —
It has been decided to postpone the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge that connects the Canadian province of Ontario and the U.S. state of Michigan, after an agreement between Canada and the United States to delay its operation for several weeks in order to complete the resolution of a number of outstanding technical and procedural issues.

The authorities supervising the project confirmed that the decision came within the framework of joint cooperation between the two countries to ensure the readiness of all systems and operational infrastructures before starting the crossing traffic on the new bridge.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney explained that the delay was made at the request of the American side, pointing out that there are technical and administrative matters that require more time before the official opening.

The Gordie Howe Bridge is considered one of the largest cross-border infrastructure projects in North America, as it extends between the Canadian city of Windsor and the American city of Detroit, and it is expected to play a pivotal role in trade movement and goods transportation between the two countries.

The project costs about 4.7 billion Canadian dollars, and it was fully funded by the Canadian side, while arrangements for joint ownership and operation were agreed upon after it enters service.

The Canadian government had previously indicated that the bridge was almost ready for opening, but completing some operational, security, and customs requirements pushed both parties to postpone the announced date.

This development comes after months of political controversy surrounding the project, as U.S. President Donald Trump had previously criticized the financing and ownership arrangements of the bridge, demanding a greater American role in the project.

Despite the delay, Canadian authorities confirm that the project faces no threat to its future or economic feasibility, and that the official opening will be determined once all the necessary technical and operational requirements are completed to ensure its full and safe launch.
