Nearly half a million addresses in Canada will lose home mail delivery service

Ottawa —
Canada Post announced that it will stop home mail delivery service to about half a million addresses in Canada, as part of a plan to convert these addresses to community mailboxes.

The corporation said the conversion will include nearly 500,000 homes, in a move aimed at reducing costs and modernizing the distribution model amid declining volumes of traditional mail and increasing financial pressures on the postal service.

Under the plan, affected residents will not receive mail directly at their doorsteps, but will be required to use designated community mailboxes in their areas.

The process is expected to be carried out in phases, with affected residents being notified before the change is implemented in their neighborhoods.

Canada Post says that the shift to community mailboxes will help improve operational efficiency, but it may raise objections from seniors, people with disabilities, and those who rely on home mail delivery for health or mobility reasons.

This step comes as part of a broader discussion about the future of postal services in Canada, amid changing communication habits, declining paper mail, and increased reliance on parcels and e-commerce.
