The Lionel Gelber Prize for books related to global affairs increases to $50,000

Toronto - The Canadian prize for books related to global affairs has tripled its purse to reach $50,000.

Presented by the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy and Foreign Policy magazine at the University of Toronto, the prize was previously awarded at $15,000 annually for an English-language non-fiction book on international affairs. Organizers say they are excited to increase the cash prize and attract more attention to titles addressing world issues.

This year's winner will receive the lucrative honor at a ceremony and public lecture at the Munk School in April.

The prize was established in 1989 by Canadian diplomat Lionel Gelber. Last year's winner was former U.S. adviser Carter Malkasian for "The American War in Afghanistan: A History," published by Oxford University Press.
