Facebook launches a social network for university students only

Published: September 10, 2020

Agencies: Facebook today Thursday unveiled Facebook Campus, a social network dedicated only to university students, helping them communicate among themselves.

The company – which owns the world's largest social network with about 2.5 billion users – said in a post on its blog: "Today, we launch Facebook Campus, a space for universities only designed to help students connect with their classmates about shared interests." It added: "Facebook Campus makes it easier to find and start conversations within your college community."

Facebook pointed out that students are now facing new challenges as some universities move to partial or full remote learning; therefore, finding a way to stay connected to college life is more important than ever.

Facebook believes that college is the right time to make new friends, find people who share the same interests, and discover new opportunities to connect, including clubs, study groups, sports, and more.

The company indicated that its social network was originally just a university network in its early days, and now it returns to its roots with Facebook Campus to help students build and maintain these relationships, even if they are far from their college.

As for how the network works, Facebook explained that Facebook Campus is a dedicated section of the main Facebook app designed for students, with a university profile different from their main Facebook profile.

To create the university profile, all students need is their college email and graduation year; other information, such as major, classes, and hometown, is optional. Once the university profile is set up, students can discover groups and events specific to their college and connect with classmates who share similar interests. When sharing content on Facebook Campus, only other student users will see it.

The new social network from Facebook offers the Campus Chat feature that provides students with real-time chat rooms. Students can create chat rooms for dormitories, clubs, or any other groups they are part of on campus.

It is noted that the new Facebook Campus network is available only to a number of universities in the United States, with no information about its launch date in other countries.
