British Columbia —
Authorities in British Columbia have issued evacuation orders for residents in areas north of Pemberton, following a glacial lake outburst and the flow of large amounts of water and debris towards nearby river channels.
The phenomenon, known as a glacial lake outburst, caused a sudden surge of water from a high glacial area, raising concerns about flash floods that could carry rocks, silt, and trees, causing damage to roads, property, and infrastructure.
The evacuation orders included several properties around waterways and low-lying areas, with authorities urging residents to leave their homes immediately and stay away from riverbanks, bridges, and areas prone to erosion.
Emergency teams are monitoring the water flow and debris movement in the area, amid warnings that the danger may continue for hours, especially with the possibility of rising water levels or additional collapses along the affected channels.
Authorities confirmed that residents who have left their homes should not return before an official notice is issued, as the ground around waterways may be unstable, and the water force can change rapidly without sufficient warning.
The incident comes in an area that has witnessed repeated risks in recent years related to ice melting and the formation of glacial lakes prone to outbursts, a phenomenon experts link to changes in the nature of glaciers and rising temperatures.
Emergency teams are still assessing the potential damage, while the main focus remains on protecting residents and preventing access to areas that may be exposed to sudden flows or mudslides.
